The water from the rivers in southern Tanzania was taken by buckets or hand dug wells with bucket and rope. Sometimes there are wells drilled with an imported plunger pump (Adridef). Piston Hand Pump on holes is half defect in Tanzania. Because repair is too expensive and/or too complicated for the local society.
To close hand dug wells with a concrete lid and to place a rope pump, these wells are no longer top polluted. By hand instead of machine to drill wells and imported plunger pumps to replace rope pumps, reduce the cost from €3000, -- to €500,--.
If you have the water above you the easiest way is to filter it with a flower pot full of holes and filled with sand. But an almost and cheaper better solution is jars of porous ceramics. Ceramics is actually “baked sand”, say just clay.... and that is also (very fine) sand. Compare it with our water from the dunes and you know why it comes crystal clear above.
